RE: TARGETED TRIBUTARY NOMINATION- SOUTH RIVER

            Mr. Judy,

I write to urge you to continue protection for Maryland oyster sanctuaries and to nominate the South River in Anne Arundel County as a targeted tributary for oyster restoration work. Restoring native oyster habitat and population levels is an important goal for Maryland under the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement, and an important goal for me personally.

The South River is the only tributary on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay that encompasses:

  • an existing oyster sanctuary area,
  • private oyster aquaculture leaseholds, and
  • public shellfish harvest areas.

The South River is thus positioned to realize the broadest benefit from the oyster restoration work currently being considered by this Commission, generating both environmental and economic benefits. Science says the sanctuaries are working and the South River is not in range for the oyster disease MSX*.

PRIVATE PUBLIC PARTNERSHIPS

In addition, the South River enjoys robust private contributions to oyster recovery, that will minimize the burden on taxpayers to ensure the success of any oyster restoration work undertaken in the River. The Marylanders Grow Oysters program maintains 370 oyster cages in the River, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation maintains sixteen oyster restoration sites in the River, more than any other western shore tributary. In addition, the non-profit Oyster Recovery Partnership ("ORP") has planted over 40 million spat-on-shell in the South River since 2006.

Please protect sanctuaries on the South River and select the South River as a targeted tributary for further oyster restoration!

Sincerely,
