What's growing on your oysters?

by cindy

What's growing on your oysters may not be algae......

It could be Bryozoans

Bryozoans are minute, tentacle-bearing, moss-like animals that form colonies permanently attached to rocks, pilings, ropes, etc. Individual bryozoans are microscopic, but colonies appear as soft, fuzzy, greenish-brown layer and can be mistaken for algae. Bryozoans are filter feeders!  We like them!!

Algae growth is less fuzzy and usually more strand-like.

Rain Garden Planting at Historic London Town

by cindy

Thanks to the dozens of volunteers who came out Saturday morning to help plant hundreds of plants in beautiful Historic London Town and Gardens!  This is a system of three rain gardens and step pools that help control stormwater run off from the property into the South River.

It was a beautiful day and many hands made for light work.

Donna Ware, Executive Director of Historic London Town and Mel Wilkins of the Spa Creek Conservancy gave an inspiring and educational introduction.

County Executive Leopold paid a special visit and planted the first plant.

Anne Guilette and Erik help plant along the step pools, below.

MD Dept of Ag sprays to control Gypsy Moths

by cindy

If you noticed a helicopter flying around Quiet Waters Park this morning - the MD Dept of Agriculture was spraying for Gypsy Moth larvae.  Obviously, a serious problem in this area.  They were spraying Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis)  a pesticide formulated with a naturally occurring soil bacterium.  Click here to read more about their Gypsy Moth program.
