Within the South River Greenway is an amazing diversity of plants native to Maryland, but the ecosystem is constantly facing threats from non-native species. Among the new threats is wavyleaf basketgrass, a highly invasive grass native to southeast Asia. It has invaded several sites in the Greenway and is likely to continue spreading and choking out native vegetation unless we take measures to stop it. At this event we will be hand-pulling this grass that is encroaching on a site of a rare fern called Adder's-tongue Fern.   Adder's-tongue Fern, so named because its stalk resembles a snake's tongue, has the highest chromosome count of any known vascular plant, with up to 1,400 chromosomes (versus an average of 240-300). It is a rare sighting indeed, and with your help we can maintain its presence in the Greenway. Join us afterwards for a short hike and lunch in the woods!
