Join Annapolis Maritime Museum Director of Education Charlotte Rich, along with other speakers, for an intensive daylong learning experience studying the eastern oyster often called the Pearl of the Chesapeake.
10-10:30 a.m. Welcome and lecture — Museum Director Jeff Holland discusses 400 years of
Bay history and the people who carved out a livelihood from the once abundant Chesapeake sea life.
10:30-11:15 a.m. See Capt. John Van Alstine’s working oyster boat and learn about the
socio-economic impact of the eastern oyster on coastal Maryland as well as the resulting growth of
the oyster industry in the 19th and 20th centuries.
11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Art Tuers and Larry Griffin recount their boyhood experiences prepping and
packing oysters at McNasby’s Oyster House. Learn about the biology and physiology of oysters and
try your hand at oyster shucking.
12:30-1:15 p.m. Enjoy lunch and sample an oyster dish prepared by Pat Mahoney of Wild Country
Seafood, a family owned and operated Eastport seafood business.
1:15-2:30 p.m. Bryan Gomes of Oyster Recovery Partnership discusses the effects of overharvesting
and pollution on oyster beds. Examine legislative and environmental steps being taken to clean up
and protect the watershed and sustain oysters.
2:30-3 p.m. Representatives from several environment organizations explain what you can do to
reduce pollution, sustain bay sea life and help with restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.
