Position: Environmental Field and Lab Intern – Summer
Schedule: 20-30 Hrs/week., Term: mid-May 2010 – September 2010
Compensation will be commensurate with experience
Job Description:
The Environmental Intern will assist in the South RIVERKEEPER’s Watershed Monitoring Programs. This internship requires field sampling in non-tidal and tidal areas in semi-rugged territory in all weather conditions. The intern will be expected to carry out project activities individually after training.
Primary duties include:
- Water quality sampling for Enterococci on bathing beaches, streams, and other locations as instructed
- Participating in weekly water quality sampling events on a boat and in streams
- Analyzing water quality samples for nutrient
- Assisting with project data entry and storage
- Conducting additional water quality monitoring including 8 hr continuous
(hourly) sampling on selected streams and targeted outfall sampling.
Requirements:
1) Must be dependable.
2) Interest in water quality.
3) Ability to work independently in the office and in the field.
4) Ability to work in the field in all weather conditions.
5) Ability to conduct fieldwork in creeks, which may include carrying equipment (up to 20 lbs), hiking up to 2 miles in one day over uneven, difficult terrain through wet, muddy, and overgrown areas.
6) Willingness and ability to conduct some field work and sampling activities alone.
7) Must follow Standard Operating Procedure for collection of water quality samples and data.
Desirable Qualifications:
1) Analytical background in environmental science, chemistry, biology or other related field (especially related to water quality and/or creek ecology).
2) Experience conducting independent research.
3) Laboratory experience
4) Statistical experience
5) Experience with Microsoft Excel
6) Experience conducting environmental education
7) Knowledge of environmental policy
8) Knowledge of Maryland Boating laws and/or carry a USCG boating certificate Additional Positions:
