It is generally recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency not to swim in water containing enterococci counts that a single sample result of more than 104/100 CFU's. Thus counts that exceed 104/100 ml are highlighted in red. For more information about the EPA method and interpretation of results, visit this EPA document (page 24 explains CFU's). Anne Arundel County Health Department advises against swimming for 48 hours after a heavy rain.

As far as bacteria goes, things look quite good. You may have noticed the brown color of the water intensifying this week. On Tuesday I brought a water sample to a DNR lab that found 472,440 cells/ml. of a small blue-green algae called Cynobium. The bloom looked much more intense on Wednesday than on Tuesday. I would advise avoiding swimming when the water is very discolored from an algae bloom.

No surprises this week. After heavy thunderstorms dropped approximately 0.9 inches of rain Tuesday evening, we saw elevated bacteria levels throughout much of the South River. 62% of our sites exceeded EPA’s single sample criteria of 104 colonies of bacteria per 100 ml of water. This means that the risk of getting some type of intestinal disorder from swimming is higher than EPA deems acceptable and is also consistent with the Anne Arundel County Health Department’s Advisory to avoid swimming in local rivers or the Bay for 48 hours after heavy rain events.
