Many contractors are selling floating piers and telling local residents that they do not require a permit from Maryland Department of the Environment.
This is incorrect! Whether it floats or is attached to pilings, you are allowed by code to have 200 square feet of deck space in addition to the walkway.
Floating piers prevent sunlight from reaching the bottom and thus inhibit the growth of aquatic grasses.
