The South RIVERKEEPER® collects water samples from local swimming beaches each week from May through September and sends them to be analyzed for bacteria levels by Sally Horner at AACC. EPA states that bacteria levels higher than 104 probable colonies per milliliter of water is unsafe for swimming. In addition the Health Department recommends avoiding contact with the water for 48 hours after a heavy rain >>>.
Beginning 2008, Your community can sign up to have your beach tested by paying a small fee to cover the cost of the test. Read more information about this initiative, Operation Clearwater - South River.
